Top luxury hotels in Morocco

Royal Mansour Marrakech, spa

Looking for a luxury hotel in Morocco? You’re in the right place! Through my previous career in luxury tour operating, and now through writing guidebooks and articles for Lonely Planet, The Telegraph, and Time Out, I’ve had the privilege of staying at many of Morocco’s top luxury hotels.

It’s been fascinating to see Morocco’s luxury tourism grow steadily since I moved here in 2018, watching the shift from being only a budget travel destination to a mix of budget, mid-range, and exceptional luxury hotel options. The arrival of five-star resorts in our small community in Taghazout has had a huge knock-on effect, mainly through employment and tourist spending.

While Marrakech has had luxury hotels for several years, some parts of the country, including the capital, Rabat, only welcomed five-star hotels, such as Waldorf Astoria and the Four Seasons, in the last few years.

This is a list of the top luxury hotels in Morocco, bookable as a standalone short break or combined as two or three for a longer itinerary. If you’re considering a full touring itinerary and wondering how best to combine the hotels, I offer travel planning calls and/or can recommend the best-suited locally based tour operator. Let’s discuss.

I’ve listed Morocco’s top luxury hotels by city or region, and I'll keep updating the list as I travel and receive feedback. This post contains affiliate links. If you click them, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Casablanca

Four Seasons Casablanca

Most visitors to Casablanca will stay one, at most two, nights. It’s a fast-paced city; find a hotel to ‘arrive’, rest, or prepare for a long-haul flight. The top luxury hotels in Casablanca are the Four Seasons Casablanca and the Royal Mansour Casablanca. I recommend Four Seasons Casablanca for travellers seeking an oceanside location, with an outdoor pool, spa, dining, and signature Four Seasons style and service. For a city centre experience, the esteemed Royal Mansour Casablanca is on one of the main avenues. It’s part of the King's hotel brand, known for impeccable service and palatial style. The hotel has a city location and vibe, with city views from the rooftop, a decadent spa, no pool, and a host of in-house dining options, also open to non-residents.

Rabat

Four Seasons Rabat

Rabat is a great city for first-time visitors to arrive in Morocco, surprisingly clean, green and beautiful. It has interesting cultural and royal sights; including the King's main residence. The two top luxury hotels in Rabat are the Four Seasons Ksar al Bahr (translates as Palace by the Sea) and the Waldorf Astoria. The Four Seasons has an oceanside location and extensive grounds, with outdoor pools, fine dining, a spa, and many rooms with balconies and direct ocean views. Some resort buildings were part of the original palace, so while the interiors are new, they retain a historic feel and a connection to Rabat’s royal roots. The Waldorf Astoria is located in the Mohammed VI Tower, now Morocco’s tallest tower. On the riverbank, it offers panoramic views across the city. A brand-new purpose-built hotel with 55 suites. Their state-of-the-art spa spans two floors, and one restaurant is guided by Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse.

Marrakech

La Sultana Marrakech spa

Marrakech has a long list of luxury hotels; it is hard to choose! However, for a true Moroccan luxury hotel, La Mamounia and Royal Mansour Marrakech are my top picks among the larger hotels. La Maumonia for the elegance, a sense of history, the sprawling gardens, spa, and service. Royal Mansour, with its individual riad-style rooms, is exquisite and palatial, and the spa here is one of the best I have ever experienced. However, my top choice for a luxury hotel in Marrakech would be La Sultana; I love this more intimate stay. The same level of luxury as the larger hotels, just on a smaller scale and more personalised.

Oualidia

La Sultana Oualidia

If you are looking to combine a luxury hotel in Marrakech with a luxury coastal hotel, La Sultana Oualidia is my first choice. Situated on a relaxing lagoon. This spa-centric boutique hotel in a small fishing village is where you can top up on fresh oysters, sunshine and fresh ocean air. The hotel can organise plenty of activities on land and in the ocean to connect you with nature. Fantastic service. Very romantic, spoiling, and a popular destination for honeymooners.

Essaouira

L’Heure Bleue Essaouira

This pretty coastal city also pairs well with Marrakech, just under a 3-hour drive away. You can easily explore Essaouira in a couple of days. The top hotel in Essaouira is the L'Heure Bleue Relais and Chateaux in the Medina, within walking distance to everything, including the fishing port, beach, and relaxed souk shops and galleries.

Check rates and availability for the L’Heure Bleue Relais and Chateaux here.

Asilah/ Larache coast

La Fiermontina Ocean

In northern Morocco, between Rabat and Tangier, you’ll find La Fiermontina Ocean, a rural luxury beach hotel on a wild stretch of Atlantic coastline. I love this coastline near Tangier, with some of my favourite long sandy beaches, sleepy villages, and endless ocean views. The hotel is closely linked to the local community, and near to Asilah, a pretty, white-washed, artsy town.

Atlas Mountains

Kasbah Tamadot

Kasbah Tamadot was one of Morocco's original luxury hotels. The brainchild of Sir Richard Branson and his mother, Eve Branson. It has continued to evolve and still stands as a luxury fortress on the edge of a valley. A great place for hiking, relaxing and enjoying Morocco’s mountain culture. Accommodation varies, from rooms within the Kasbah to luxury tents, plus a recent addition: individual riads. For a more private adults-only retreat, hidden away in the olive groves near Ouirgane, Olinto is perfect for people who want to relax in privacy, go on gentle hikes, take cookery classes, and be spoilt in nature. Pool Pavilions have heated plunge pools and spacious living areas.

Fez

Riad Fes Relais and Chateaux

Fez is Morocco’s cultural capital, packed with history and some of Morocco’s best-preserved Islamic architecture. The city has a handful of palaces, but my first choice for a luxury hotel in Fez is the Riad Fes Relais and Chateaux in the Medina.

Sightseeing tip: From Fez, you can easily do a day trip to the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the wine region; Chateau Roslane offers wine tastings and lunch.

Check rates and availability for Riad Fes here.

Tamuda Bay for Mediterranean beaches

Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay

Morocco’s northern coastline is still relatively undiscovered by international tourists. It is, however, well known in Morocco and loved by Moroccans, especially those living overseas who return to visit relatives in summer. The top luxury hotel here would be the Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay. Expect royal treatment; it is part of the King’s hotel brand, with a calm Mediterranean Sea and sandy beaches.

Tangier

Villa Mabrouka Tangier

I love Tangier for its relaxed coastal vibe, lovely café culture in the historic Kasbah, interesting shopping, pretty squares, and views over the Strait of Gibraltar. It’s where you can feel and see Europe and Africa blended; there’s a fast ferry to Tarifa (Spain) that takes 1 hour from Tangier. Top luxury hotels here include Villa Mabrouka, Jasper Conran's twelve-room villa hotel set within beautiful gardens, and the Fairmont Tazi Palace for a larger historic hotel with city views, a sizeable spa (2500sqm), pool, and in-house dining.

Check rates and availability for Villa Mabrouka here, and Fairmont Tazi Palace here.

Southern Morocco

Dar Ahlam

For adventures in the south, head to the Ouarzazate and/ or Skoura region. My top luxury hotel in this region of southern Morocco is Dar Ahlam; a retreat that celebrates Amazigh (Berber) culture in a remote location, with dreamy rooms and excellent service. A relatively new option, further east in the Dades Valley, is the Eden Boutique Hotel for those who love earthy landscapes, open spaces, and geology.

Sightseeing tip: At Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate, you can visit the sets of many blockbuster movies (Gladiator 2) that have chosen this area for its remote desert and rugged landscapes. Also worth a visit is the incredible historic Ait Ben Haddou fortress.

Check rates and availability for Dar Ahlam here, and Eden Boutique Hotel here.

Taghazout Bay

Fairmont Taghazout Bay

The stretch of coast from Agadir to Essaouira is home to some of Morocco’s best surf spots, with Taghazout being the country’s surfing capital. For the top luxury hotel, Fairmont Taghazout Bay is ideal for surfers who want a luxury beachfront location and can check the waves from bed.
