Tétouan, Morocco: Things to Do & Why to Visit in 2026

With a new direct flight connecting London to Tétouan from March 2026, Morocco’s elegant northern city is stepping quietly into the spotlight.

Fondly known as the “White Dove”, Tétouan is defined by its striking whitewashed architecture, Andalusian heritage, and peaceful Mediterranean energy. Less hectic than Marrakech and less touristed than Fez, it offers deep cultural immersion, without the crowds.

I recently had the privilege of writing this article for The i Paper and realised I had additional notes to share, so keep reading for more on this compact city in northern Morocco.

If you’re looking for an authentic Moroccan city break with beaches, art, and history, here’s why Tétouan deserves your attention.

Why Visit Tétouan?

  • A UNESCO-listed medina without the mass tourism

  • Proximity to Mediterranean beaches (15km)

  • Morocco’s leading fine art school and contemporary art scene

  • Spanish-Moorish architecture and history

  • Easy access to the Rif Mountains and Chefchaouen

Things to Do in Tétouan

Explore the UNESCO Medina of Tétouan

Medina of Tétouan

Tétouan has one of the most architecturally complete medinas in Morocco, and one of the least crowded.

Wander through whitewashed alleyways, artisan workshops, and traditional souks without the crowds of Marrakech. The medina’s Andalusian influence sets it apart, reflecting centuries of Spanish-Moorish heritage. This is a medina to explore slowly.

Discover Morocco’s Leading Art School

Institut National des Beaux-Arts

Founded in 1945, the INBA is Morocco’s most prestigious fine art school. The school sometimes hosts events, contact via their website. Its influence spills into the city’s café culture, galleries, and creative spaces. For design-minded travellers, this artistic pulse gives Tétouan a uniquely intellectual edge.

Visit Tétouan’s Museums

  • Archaeological Museum (rich in Roman-era artefacts)

  • Museum of Modern Art, housed in a former Spanish train station

These smaller museums offer depth without crowds, perfect for culturally curious travellers.

Relax on the Mediterranean Coast

Just 15km from the city, you’ll find sandy Mediterranean beaches at Tamuda Bay and Martil.

Luxury resorts such as Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay and Banyan Tree Tamouda Bay sit alongside relaxed beach towns and hidden coves. Tétouan makes an ideal culture-and-coast combination.

Take a Day Trip to the Rif Mountains & Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen. The famous “Blue City” is just 60km away. The surrounding Rif Mountains also offer scenic hiking and traditional village life, a compelling contrast to the coast.

Where to Eat in Tétouan (Local Recommendations)

Seafood, Spanish dishes, and regional Moroccan specialities feature highly on menus in Tétouan. Chez Rida, a sandwich shop close to Place el Mechouar, was a great local recommendation.

When I asked the team at Norte Coffee Gallery for their favourite local food spots, they suggested:

  • Chahd Cham (Avenue 10 Mai) – for a classic bocadillo sandwich

  • Omar’s Burgers – they only sell simple smashed burgers and small Coke bottles

  • Avenida or Rahmuni – for traditional Moroccan patisserie

  • Esquina del Pescado – seafood

  • Restinga – seafood with alcohol served

This is a city where you can eat well without inflated tourist pricing.
