Hotel Review: Rhino River Lodge, Manyoni Game Reserve, South Africa
In May 2026, I was introduced to the magical world of safari with a 4-year-old. Travelling with my brother and niece to South Africa, our first safari stop was in KwaZulu-Natal, where we discovered the Manyoni Game Reserve.
Summary
Rhino River Lodge came highly recommended by industry friends in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) who know family safaris well. This on-the-ground knowledge was especially helpful when choosing a safari for a 4-year-old. Manyoni Game Reserve is within easy reach of Durban and the Indian Ocean beaches, including Umhlanga and Ballito. Rhino River Lodge is a 4-star family-friendly safari lodge with kind staff and excellent cuisine. Their charming two-bedroom duplex chalets and private bush home room options make it ideal for families with kids or groups of friends travelling together. There weren’t many kid-centric activities for younger kids (under 8 years); however, for a 1- or 2-night stay, it's a great way to dip your toes into family safari. Manyoni Game Reserve is very pretty with great Big Five (and lots of other) wildlife sightings. Fewer vehicles than the nearby Hluhluwe-Imfolozi National Park – it's a private reserve, not a national park – and we only encountered a handful of other vehicles during our drives. For longer stays, they also offer interesting conservation activities in the reserve, such as an elephant interaction, managed separately from the lodge.
Quick verdict on Rhino River Lodge
Pretty lodge in a river/ woodland setting. The main thatched-roof areas open onto a raised deck overlooking the river. Boma for fires and pre- or post-dinner drinks. Beautiful tree-shaded gardens with warthog and impala wandering through during the day. For those who like visuals, we created a short video of our stay, you can watch it here.
Who is Rhino River Lodge for
Guests were a mix of South Africans, treating themselves to a safari stay, and international travellers, including retired couples, self-drive groups of friends, and honeymooners. We were the only guests with children at that time of year, May, but their room options invite families, and it was a very safe and nurturing space for families to connect in nature. And the staff were incredible with Amelia, my 4-year-old niece, as she discovered South Africa’s wilderness areas for the first time.
Getting to Rhino River Lodge
The lodge is a 3.5-hour drive from Durban. Straight up the N2. Just after/ across from Phinda. The final 10 km of the drive is on a gravel track and in the reserve. Best to have an SUV/ 4x4 vehicle, or book a private transfer.
Why we chose Rhino River Lodge (and KwaZulu-Natal)
The Manyoni was recommended by industry friends as a great safari option for young families, especially those interested in combining safari with beach time and being close to Durban and St Lucia. Having been on safari in several other national parks and game reserves in South Africa, I was curious to experience the Manyoni Game Reserve. I’d heard good things about the wildlife sightings and conservation projects here. Having done a lot of research into family safari lodges, Rhino River Lodge offered great value for money, especially for the size, style and comfort of their family-friendly rooms, the food, and the wildlife experiences.
First impressions of Rhino River Lodge
A warm welcome from their sweet staff. The beautiful woodland scenery. We saw giraffe, impala, kudu, zebra, pumba (warthogs) on the drive from the entrance gate to the camp. An enclosed pool area in the garden (not heated in winter). Excitement and joy on being shown around our spacious family chalet with a covered patio area, one bedroom downstairs and one up in the mezzanine; the rooms share one bathroom on the ground floor.

Room options at Rhino River Lodge
Eight rooms, including Deluxe Rooms and the Two-Bedroom Family Chalets. A new addition for 2026 is The Hideaway, which sleeps 2 adults looking for privacy and romance (with a stunning outdoor bathtub). Plus, for families or friends, there’s a two-bedroom Cottage (sleeps 6), and the Homestead, also two-bedroom, sleeping 6. The Cottage and the Homestead have their own small splash pools.

Food and drink
Delicious and beautifully presented. Breakfast was a selection of fruit, cereal and yoghurt, and then an à la carte menu: a classic English breakfast (bacon, sausages, eggs, tomatoes and toast) or French Toast with bacon, banana and maple syrup. On the kids menu, there was a Junior Ranger option: sausage served in French Toast with cheese. Light lunch is served buffet-style: chicken skewers, salad, mini burgers and chocolate mousse. It was raining during our stay, so the first evening we had drinks by the fire in one of their two thatched communal areas. Dining was in a separate area next door, overlooking the river. Lamb chops, pannacotta and berry coulis. Morning coffee on game drives, a large pour of Amarula, and cookies/rusks. Drinks not included in the rate, paid locally on departure.
What we loved at Rhino River Lodge
Minnie, our waitress/hostess, was calming amid Amelia’s (4-year-old) chaos and changing of mind. Basi, an unflappable safari guide, handled the group dynamics well (we were eight on our drives, different ages and languages). I loved the spoiling food and seeing Amelia’s joy at the different wildlife sightings on the drives. The comfort, style, and space of our two-bedroom chalet; wish we had stayed two nights to enjoy it more. Breakfast on the deck with wildlife roaming freely. ‘Mac + Cheese’ for Amelia, flexibility to eat earlier and wherever she wanted. The kids’ safari logbook with animal and Manyoni Game Reserve facts was a big hit, and kept Amelia engaged throughout our stay.
What could be better
For self-drivers, the exit signs could be better signposted (or we could have listened to the departure instructions better). We heard some sound of the trucks on the N2 on the main area deck, but not in our room. Letting guests know in advance of their stay which activities need to be prebooked, i.e., K9 interaction. Offer a later check-out if possible; the morning game drive was 6-9 am, then straight to breakfast, which meant the 10 am check-out was a rush. This wasn’t helped by the fact that we only had 1 night here, and we put a lot of pressure on the guide/staff.
Is Rhino River Lodge worth it?
Yes. Full Board rate includes game drives, excludes drinks. Price between ZAR4650pp - 5000pp/ night. We felt it was a great price.
Envelopes are left in the room for tips; their suggestions are ZAR250/room/night, ZAR200/guide per drive, ZAR250/host/night.
Wildlife drives at Rhino River Lodge
I was amazed at the many talents of Basi (our guide/ driver); he was tracking wildlife, driving, guiding, and serving guests for coffee stops. Our first drive was quite challenging with the rain; there’s no cover on the vehicle. However, we covered up with the ponchos the staff gave us. Zebras, giraffe, impala, nyala, wildebeest, kudu, hippos, crocodile, elephant herd, different lion sightings including cubs that came very close. Birds: yellow hornbill, lilac-breasted roller. I really enjoyed that we were only one or two vehicles at sightings.
Our drive/ guide was tuned into the guests in his vehicle, asking, “Do you feel comfortable? I know the elephants well, but if you feel unsafe, we will move off.” He also explained, whilst parked next to a pride of sleeping lions, that the lions see the vehicle as a whole. When someone stood up, the lions woke instantly, alert; the look in their eyes commanded respect. Everything felt like an adventure: the jeep splashing through puddles, the misty morning air heavy with the smell of dung, gigantic spider webs, and mud flicking off tyres.
Manyoni Game Reserve has views across to the Lebombo Mountains. Bordering Thanda Private Game Reserve. Leopard territory. Shrubland, acacia, woodland. Some lodges are close to the N2, which is busy with trucks from Zimbabwe heading to the ports in KwaZulu-Natal. (If the occasional sound of trucks is a deal-breaker, an industry friend recommended Mavela Game Lodge as a tented camp further away from the N2, with all-inclusive rack rates R7500pp/ night. Kids 5 years plus).

Rhino horn trimming, night drives (8 pm), rhino orphanage visit, elephant interaction 11 am, pangolin conservation “soft release” in the Manyoni Game Reserve, K9 training (anti-poaching training, three dogs trained on human trafficking.
